Century College Science/Library Building (2008)

Welcome to Our HLC Reviewers,

Century College is very excited to have completed our first Systems Portfolio and to present it for review by the Higher Learning Commission.  Since joining the Academic Quality Improvement Program in 2005, Century College personnel and students have worked diligently to build a culture of continuous improvement across the institution.  We have made headway, but we also know that we still have a lot to learn and to accomplish at Century College.

In 2000, during our last reaffirmation of accreditation process, Century College was still learning to become one campus after merging Lakewood Community College with Northeast Metro Technical College to form Century College. There were many barriers to success including a highway dividing our two campuses, aging buildings and reductions in legislative funding. Multiple changes in leadership with over 10 presidents in 10 years created a sense of instabilty and a lack of direction.

I am very honored to be in my tenth year as president at Century College and to see  enrollment growth in both our credit-based courses and Continuing Education and Customized Training that reflects our commitment to diversity and serving the underserved. I am gratified to see a new and renovated facilities with the major renovation

of the Kopp Technology Center and the construction of a new $20 million Science and Library Building. These provide state-of-the-art technology and science laboratories and classrooms. The new library merged two outdated libraries into one central location. The building won an award for its innovative environmental design elements.

Century College currently has three AQIP Action Projects that are in progress (Assessment, Student Success, and Building a Common Vision:  Academic Success Support and Tutoring Services).  We have completed five other projects since joining AQIP [Assessment Projects(2), Communication, E-Student Services, and an Academic Success Project].  The AQIP Action Project model is helping us hone our skills in continuous improvement, and you will see our commitment to Plan-Do-Study-Act as the college approaches our opportunities. Which include student retention and on-going assessment of student learning.

We  also value and honor our strengths in employee development, and in innovation which includes projects such as the GPS LifePlan, and the Center of Excellence for Access and Opportunity. A collaborative spirit that is embraced by our college and the greater community has emerged.
